Drivers are most at risk when they first get their Ps and start driving www.doorway.ruers: Gearing Up is a driver mentoring program operating in the Huon Valley and Kingborough region designed to help new drivers get valuable driving experience. Gearing Up is for anyone who wants to drive, and: has difficulty getting the 50 hours driving experience required for a provisional licence. is experiencing financial hardship.
The Mentor is to be provided with the name of the Learner Driver prior to the meeting to ensure any conflicts of interest are avoided. Following the first supervised driving session, the Project Officer will contact the Learner Driver and Mentor individually to seek feedback on the session and to assess the fit. The Hobart Police and Community Youth Club (Hobart PCYC) Learner Driver Mentor Program (LDMP) will provide assistance to young people who have limited or no access to a supervisor driver and/or vehicle to gain the required experience to acquire a provisional licence. Through the attainment of a provisional licence a young person has the ability to achieve an increased level of independence as well as a greater level of social inclusion by having better access to education, employment. The Gearing Up program is affiliated with a larger body called DMT- Driver Mentoring Tasmania, this body oversees all driver mentoring programs throughout Tasmania. There are currently two vehicles in operation with the program, one based in Huonville, the other in Kingston. The program is is now available to all age groups in the Huon Valley, Channel and Kingborough areas.
The purpose of DMT is to engage with community groups, government and non-government organisations, private enterprise and grant providers to ensure the future.
